Intensive language tuition, including through a year spent studying or working in Italy, will develop your ability to read, write and speak the language to a high standard, including in translation. Linguistics Through the study of linguistics, you will learn how language is acquired, produced and understood. You will gain a broad understanding of how it develops and changes over time, as well as how it is represented structurally in the brain. You will also explore how language functions in interactions between individuals and in society. To help you do this, we provide specialist linguistics and phonetics equipment, which ranks among the best in the world. Why Edinburgh? Italian has been taught here since 1919, and has been part of our tradition for many years, as far back as the 18th century.
