Our animation degree has been developed in collaboration with top practitioners to provide you both the professional skills and knowledge that the industry is looking for. Bring your characters to life from day one - working in industry-style studios using the latest tools and techniques and working as part of a team on high quality creative projects. You'll have intensive, hands-on tutorials with industry-trained tutors, who alongside practising animation professionals will provide regular feedback on your work. You’ll graduate with a Masters, MA, qualification after studying this four year course (or a BA after three years) along with the skills, experience, and showstopping portfolio, to really stand out.
Level 4 / Year 1: All our undergraduate students study common modules in their first year. This will give you the all-round skills you’ll need on your journey tobecoming a professional. • 3D for VFX – Core (15 credits) • Computer Animation – Core (15 credits) • Compositing for VFX – Core (15 credits) • Video Game Art – Core (15 credits) • Creative Foundations – Project (30 credits) • Creative Foundations – Craft (30 credits) Level 5 / Year 2 From your second year, you’ll start to focus on computer animation, developing your specialist skills and working in teams on industry-style projects. • Computer Animation – Pro (30 credits) • Computer Animation – Advanced (30 credits) • Specialism (15 credits) • Industry Studio Project (45 credits) Level 6 / Year 3 In your third year, you hone your skills and begin to demonstrate the level of knowledge needed to be a professional artist. • Advanced Specialism (30 credits) • Professional Practice (30 credits) • Professional Studio Project (60 credits) Level 7 / Year 4 (Integrated Masters) If you choose the four-year MArt programme, you’ll learn about entrepreneurship and develop the skills needed to start your own studio. As part of a team, you’ll work like a real startup studio and create a project to a commercial standard. You will be assessed on the crucial aspects that define its success: • Art and Design (30 credits) • Craft (30 credits) • Process (30 credits) • Business (30 credits)
Your work is assessed through practical assignments and retrospectives by a mix of tutor, peer, self-review and industry. In fact, often 25% of your project module grades will come from industry professionals. Formative assessment Majority of modules contain at least one piece of practice or ‘formative’ assessment for which you receive feedback. Formative assessments are developmental and do not count towards your overall module mark. Summative assessment breakdown Level 4 and 5 For Level 4 and 5 modules, your assessment will be split into two parts: 75% Product - You will be required to create a product (short computer animation, rendered image of a 3D object composited shot, etc.) to a specified brief, then present it in front of a panel and demonstrate how you have met the learning outcomes in your work. 25% Retrospective - You will be required to write a reflective analysis and present this for moderation and assessment. Level 6 One module will be assessed just like level 4 and 5 modules; for two other modules (Advanced Specialism, Professional Practice), 100% of the mark will be based on a self-evaluative portfolio. Level 7 If you’re doing the four-year MArt programme, you will be required to complete Level 7 modules. The assessment of these modules will be split into four parts corresponding to four stages of the project - Explore, Ideate, Accelerate, and Incubate. Each stage will be equal to 25% of the final mark.

We’ve designed this programme to develop pioneering minds for the creative industries, thriving on visual adrenaline. While you’re with us you’ll learn the skills you need to flourish in the industry. You’ll develop a deep understanding of your technical craft, work in teams on professional projects, and learn how to produce beautiful visual and interactive experiences. We want to make sure that the course is right for you, and that you are right for the course, so we invite applicants to a Creative Workshop. Part 1: Portfolio Review Sitting in small groups with 4 other applicants and 1 assessor, you will have 5-10 minutes to present your portfolio. This is pretty informal - we want you to show your work, discuss your creative process, and answer any questions that the group asks. This is your chance to really show off your creative skillset! The other 4 applicants in the group will then present their work, and you will be able to ask them questions. You’ll then change groups and go through the process again. Part 2: Creative Task You will work in small teams on a creative brief; coming up with ideas, bringing them to life, and presenting them at the end of the day for feedback. This task has been devised by one of our industry partners, and is the kind of challenge you would get in a real VFX/Animation/Games studio.
