Course summary

MSc Electric Vehicle Engineering is a specialist postgraduate degree that equips you with the tools and techniques necessary to address challenges associated with the development and implementation of electrification of conventional mobility solutions. The focus of the technology-related economy is drastically shifting towards electrically or electronically controlled autonomous digital systems, smart communication devices, automation and robotics, controlled remotely via smart technology using green energy resources. The postgraduate programme combines principles from electrics, electronics, control, power, automation and robotics to design, manufacture and test smart mobile vehicles/ devices, powered by green electricity. For various applications, these systems and devices are required to interact with objects, know where the objects are, and be able to perform tasks such as moving the objects to a required new position. You will be taught about smart electronics that require information from sensors that can detect position, orientation, and visual or audio signals. You will develop academic and practical skills in electric power-related areas such as electrical machines and drives, power electronics and batteries, covering all aspects of the vehicle's powertrain. This will enable you to create your own systems that are smart and cognitive, developing them from imagination through to reality. The programme will also offer an optional placement year to all students, enabling you to experience the real world and effectively connect your university experience with it.

Modules

Applied Research and Engineering Practice 1 Applied Research skills are key to addressing engineering challenges and providing creative solutions. The module aims to provide students with an opportunity to explore a research topic in depth, with appropriate research methods, interpret the results in an engineering context, provide critical discussion and conclusions, and compose a research dissertation. The students will undertake this in subject areas relevant to the programme they are enrolled on. It also allows them to plan and execute their work plan and manage their time as well as exercising their engineering judgement and applying principles of engineering practice. They are encouraged to experience engineering as problem-solving, considering the systematic processes that engineers use to define and resolve problems. Intelligent Transport Systems This module aims to provide an introduction to the key concepts of transportation policy, transportation modelling and safety, along with an understanding of the technological and legal aspects of transportation as well as an awareness of environmental issues. The objective is to provide you with the knowledge that will enable you to become competent practitioners in transport systems and transport infrastructure areas. Mental Wealth: Professional Life Electrical Automotive Engineering Practice This module aims to introduce the key concepts of electric vehicle systems. It is designed to improve the understanding of the Electric Vehicles with the focus on electrical powertrain system, vehicle dynamics, vehicle simulation techniques, control of various electric vehicle subsystems. The module is designed to improve the knowledge of communications system, cyber security focusing on autonomous vehicles. The objective is to provide you with the knowledge needed to become a competent practitioner in electric vehicle systems.

Assessment method

We assess you through a mixture of coursework, design drawings, oral examinations, your research dissertation and an end of term exam. You will be supported throughout your journey by timely feedback and support from your academic advisor and other support structure.


Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree BEng with minimum Second Class (2:2) or BSc with minimum Upper Second Class (2:1) in Mechanical/ Electrical/ Electronics Engineering or closely related subject.
