Assessment method
The form of assessment chosen for each module not only reflects the achievement of the learning outcomes for that module, but normally reflects the vocational, applied nature of the programmes. Traditional formal time-constrained assessment is by means of tests and examinations, normally of two-hour duration. To help authenticate student coursework, some modules require that the student and lecturer negotiate the topic for assessment on an individual basis, allowing the lecturer to monitor progress. Some modules where the assessment is research-based requires the students to present the results of their research to the lecturer and peers, followed by a question and answer session. Similarly, many of the more ‘practical’ modules require a final demonstration of the product created, during which, the lecturer may question the student regarding design decisions made. The combination of assessments includes; written exam, practical exam, coursework, portfolio, group work and presentation. The coursework and portfolio are used to test students’ innovation, creativity, and thinking skills whereas exams directly test knowledge and understanding of the subject.
