- Double Bass
Before applying for this course, please email the Conservatoire (email@example.com) directly with your principal study and where you are from and we can check that we can accept a late application from you. The BMus Programme is a 4 year full-time programme for performers and composers of outstanding potential. It is practical in focus and vocational in purpose. Its structure and content are flexibly designed allowing you to develop the full range of your abilities and pursue musical interests and aspirations to a high level, with a view to postgraduate study or professional employment as performers, composers, teachers, or other portfolio careers in the music profession. Year 1 of the programme has a common structure for all students, designed to ensure you develop a secure theoretical grounding on which to base your practice, whilst consolidating and enhancing your performing/compositional skills and study skills. In Years II, III and IV an increasing range of practical, creative and contextual modules are offered as electives, along with choice modules from other programmes in RCS, in a flexible structure which is designed to promote individual achievement. Choosing to study music in Glasgow means you will be part of the UK’s largest music economy, outside of London. Glasgow is home to the national companies including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Opera, Royal National Scottish Orchestra and Scottish Ensemble. We have partnerships with all of these organisations and our students benefit from playing opportunities, internships and masterclasses with our professional neighbours.
During the application and audition process, you must select which instrument(s) you wish to specialise in for the duration of your course. On this course, you can choose from the following options:
Only one instrument is studied. It may be possible to study a further instrument formatively, but this will not contribute towards the qualification.
For all courses, you must select at least one specialism from the 'primary' list. For those studying primary/secondary pathways, two instruments may be selected – one from the 'primary' list and one from the 'secondary' list. Joint pathway students may select any two instruments from either list.
Principal study We are the only conservatoire in the UK to give every performance student a 90-minute individual lesson every week during the academic year. Our students work with personal tutors on a one-to-one basis during these lessons, improving performance and musical skills tailored to individual interests and overcoming technical and creative challenges. Performing opportunities The curriculum is centred around performance – it’s what we do. RCS programmes over 500 performances each year: students perform in orchestras, concerts, ensembles as well as supporting performances for the School of Drama, Dance, Production and Screen. Likewise, composers will hear their works performed and recorded by student performers and visiting professionals. Creative and Contextual Studies In addition to your principal study, you will study modules designed to enhance your theoretical and applied music skills and develop your awareness of music in historical and contemporary contexts. In later years you can select specialist options to complement your strengths and interests. Collaborative opportunities A distinctive feature of studying at RCS is the opportunity to collaborate with students from across the conservatoire, in drama, dance, production and screen. Our unique ‘choice’ modules allow you to explore other areas of the performing arts.
