Course summary

This is so that they have sufficient authentic practice across the UKPSF dimensions of practice and the descriptor statements to be able to evidence D2 (Fellow of the HEA). Performance Teaching is designed to support professional musicians, actors, theatre technicians and dancers who teach as part of their practice as performers or in undertaking a portfolio career. The programme provides a unique opportunity to develop creative and reflective practice in performance teaching. Students will be encouraged to identify a personal pathway for their development, focusing on the pedagogy of performance and creative practice in the performing arts, in specific contexts that are most relevant to their career aspirations. The PGCert in Performance Teaching will prepare you for employment as a professional artist-teacher in a range of contexts, including Higher Education, specialist performing arts schools and junior conservatoires, state and independent schools, community and lifelong learning, and inclusive learning programmes such as Sistema-inspired initiatives. Participants with enough current Higher Education teaching experience have the option of completing an elective, Reflective Practice in Higher Education, which will lead to professional recognition from the UK Higher Education Academy This programme attracts applicants who are interested in creative, innovative and evidence-based performance teaching and offers:

  • A strong focus on critically reflective practice, framed by professional guidelines such as the Higher Education Academy Professional Standards Framework
  • Interdisciplinary perspectives
  • Feedback on practical work in Higher Education or Inclusive Learning settings
  • Teaching and mentoring delivered by an experienced team who individually have strong professional reputations as educators, performers and researchers
  • An educational philosophy that celebrates professionalism, international perspectives, creativity, and innovative practices in performance teaching

Assessment method

Assessment for learning is seen as an integral part of the learning process and is used formatively throughout the programme. Formative assessment is a core, embedded feature of this programme which aims to support the development of reflective, self-regulated and creative practice in performance pedagogy. To this end, throughout the programme participants participate in Action Learning Sets where they are guided by pedagogy mentors and develop their skills in giving and responding to peer formative assessment. Summative assessments take the form of written work (critical reflections; written observation reports), group and individual presentations; and critiques of recorded examples of teaching or facilitating learning in performance pedagogy contexts. The individual summative assessments have been designed to reflect the learning objectives and core activities in the programme.
