Course Overview Drawn from the learning of our well-respected PGCE provision, this online course allows you to attain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Non-QTS) in a flexible learning framework. The two modules on this programme will enable you to critically analyse learning and teaching. In doing so you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key theories of learning and teaching and to reflect on their application in your chosen setting. This incredibly flexible course is a unique option, perfect for people already working in an educational setting or looking to enter a career in this sector. Moreover, it is complimentary for those undertaking or who have completed an alternative route into teaching, such as the QTS Direct Assessment Only route or the SCITT route. What You Will Learn The PGCE (non-QTS) comprises two fully online Masters Level modules: Raising the Achievement of Learners and Quality Teaching in Educational Settings. These two key elements make effective practitioners. The first module, 'Raising the Achievement of Learners', aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of the enabling factors and barriers that impact learners’ achievement. The second module, 'Quality teaching in Educational Settings', focuses on the principles of quality teaching, underpinned by research and learning theories. Both of these courses empower you to implement theoretical learning into real-world teaching contexts. Modules The two core modules will allow you to focus on the relevant theory, research and practice which will enhance your knowledge and understanding of key areas in educational contexts. The assessment methods have been specifically chosen for you to interweave this knowledge of theory, research and practice with the intention of impacting positively on the practice in your context. You will be given the chance to develop your academic writing skills for Level 7 and beyond. Year One
  • PGCE7001 Raising the Achievement of Learners
This module aims to develop your knowledge of the enabling factors and barriers that impact learners’ achievements.
  • PGCE7002 Quality Teaching in Educational Settings
This module focuses on developing your understanding of the principles of Quality Teaching.

Assessment method

You will be assessed through the successful completion of the two online masters-level modules: Raising the Achievement of Learners and Quality Teaching in Educational Settings. The programme uses a variety of assessment methods ranging from different types of academic writing, literature reviews, annotated reading lists, written evaluations of practice and also through online engagement with the reflective practitioner focus. The tutor team aims to support a range of different learning styles in a fully inclusive manner.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

Students with qualifications and criteria not outlined below may be admitted to the course. Please contact the Enquiry Centre for further details. First, 2:1 or 2:2 Undergraduate degree. Applicants must currently be working in, or have access to, an educational setting for the duration of the course.
