Course summary

Your introduction to degree-level mathematics will leave no stone unturned, with a broad range of topics including discrete mathematics, linear algebra, calculus, statistics and decision mathematics. In our high-tech teaching laboratories, you’ll learn to program in a mathematical language, using software packages that are commonly used for both commercial and research purposes. As you progress, you’ll be able to choose from a range of subjects that reflect your interests and career aspirations, culminating in a chance to apply your learning in project work. Typical areas of study include further calculus and linear algebra, numerical methods and modelling, mathematics of computer graphics, number theory, cryptography, operational research, financial mathematics, statistics, neural networks, dynamical systems, and group theory.   • The four-year placement route gives you the opportunity to spend your third year on an industry placement, boosting your employment prospects on graduation. This may be subject to availability.
  • You’ll gain in-depth knowledge of mathematical software packages for use in solving real-world problems.

Open from Autumn 2023, our new Dalton building will enhance collaboration between students, staff and industry, and provide new and improved teaching spaces, including a computing and mathematics studio.
  • Our excellent facilities include 14 teaching laboratories with high-specification PCs with specialist, industry-standard software running on Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • You will have access to regular online video support, which provides additional explanation and guidance on a range of topics, from coursework and exam paper guidance to software tutorials.
