Creating, designing and managing the systems that keep things running is vital in our society – from the generation of heat, light and power to the ease and speed of communication that we’ve come to expect. How you learn All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive. This course is designed for you to study key technical areas while gaining experience as a professional engineer from day one – developing technical and professional skills from the very beginning. This lays the foundation for a course of study that can be designed to meet your specific needs, whether for a particular career or in academia. You’ll learn from staff who are experts in the field and engaged in active research. Key themes You’ll study key technical areas including digital electronics, electrical energy systems, communication engineering, system on chip (SoC) design and digital signal processing (DSP). You’ll also have the option to select from specialist modules in areas including robotics and artificial intelligence (AI). Industry-standard approaches and lab equipment are used in these modules, and tutorial examples use realistic and relevant problems to enhance your understanding of contemporary requirements. As well as improving your technical skills and knowledge, we also focus on building wider professional skills, such as planning, research techniques and promoting innovation. Course support You’ll be supported in your learning journey towards highly skilled, graduate-level employment. This includes:

  • Access to our Skills Centre with one-on-ones, webinars and online resources, where you can get help with planning and structuring your assignments.
Applied learning Work placements You’ll have the opportunity to go on a work placement for up to 12 months, where you’ll apply academic theory and your skills in a real-world setting. This hands-on experience will enhance your professional development and help you to make informed career choices after graduation. We’ll support you to source a placement that is relevant to your course. Throughout your placement, you’ll be supported to reflect on your experience and contribution to the organisation you work for. You'll also share your progress and achievements with your Placement Academic Supervisor as part of your final assessment. Live projects Throughout the course, you’ll engage in exciting live projects, applying your knowledge and skills to real-world scenarios, design challenges and problem-solving tasks. You’ll also gain experience in numerical modelling of free space optical communication systems. This requires building an understanding of digital communication, optical wireless communication and digital signal processing.

Entry requirements

• An honours degree in an appropriate science or engineering subject, usually at least second-class, or • Suitable professional qualifications in a field appropriate to engineering, or • A degree in any relevant discipline plus at least one year of relevant industrial experience, or • A diploma in a technological area, with at least three years of relevant experience. Level of English language capability • IELTS 6 or equivalent with a minimum of 5.5 in all tasks.
