Course summary

This degree gives you the skills you need to teach English in Japan and around the world. It is a 4-year degree and includes a year studying in Japan. We will equip you with communicative Japanese language skills and broad expertise in linguistics. You will gain a deep understanding of Japanese culture and explore theories and methods for teaching English in a multilingual world. We also give you the opportunity to apply for the teaching qualification, CELTA. This course is suitable if you are a beginner in Japanese, or have prior experience with the language. We will place you at an appropriate level. By the end of the course, you will have gained the ability to have conversations and discussions in Japanese. You will develop the ability to give presentations and write coherently in the language. Learn to use Japanese for academic, social, and professional purposes, reaching upper B2/C1 level on the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR). TESOL explores theories and methods of teaching English to speakers of other languages. Our approach to teaching TESOL focuses on teaching English in a multilingual world. The Linguistics part of the degree gives you a working knowledge of linguistics, how we use language, and how it's structured. There are several modules on the programme which explore linguistics. Some modules explore the way we articulate speech while others look at how English differs around the world. You will also examine how language is processed in the mind. Immerse yourself in Japanese culture with a year of studying abroad in Japan. While studying abroad, you will take Japanese language classes at your host university. You will also take courses, either taught in English or in Japanese, that are relevant to the TESOL & Linguistics side of your degree. We offer you the opportunity to take a CELTA course free of charge as part of your degree. CELTA is the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Speakers of Other languages. It is an internationally-recognised teaching qualification awarded by Cambridge Assessment English. You will gain hands-on teaching experience that will prepare you for a career in teaching English. Acceptance onto this course is subject to a successful interview.
