Course summary

Explore both the traditional and contemporary to become a multidisciplinary master of architecture and interior design. With access to gold-standard facilities, students will develop a mix of theoretical and practical design skills, and apply them to reimagine both commercial and retail environments. Students will develop their own visual language by shadowing industry experts and established professionals in their own practices. Our graduates often go on to work in architectural and urban consultancy, workplace design, housing research, retail planning and community development. During this course students will develop their own visual language and develop their personality as an interior designer. Students will research, investigate and evolve ideas surrounding the creation, rehabilitation and reimagining of new and existing buildings and spaces. Working with contemporary technologies in the design studio and workshops, students will explore design boundaries, balance style and function. They will also have the opportunity to examine user experience and consider the importance of sustainability. Key study topics include:

  • Exploration in new interior/architectural design and the re-making of existing spaces
  • Architectural study tours abroad, looking at contemporary design
  • Opportunities to take part in international events and competitions
  • Live project opportunities
  • Parametric and computer-generated design at the cutting edge
  • Latest techniques for designing structures and rapid prototyping
  • Architectural and interior history, theory and context
  • Business enterprise for design and regulatory frameworks
  • New developments in the reuse of existing buildings design
  • New developments in interior architecture/design projects around the world


Year 1: Students will build skills in communication and representation, construction and dual use environment. Alongside this, they will begin to think about their own design and angles on problems of the built environment. We encourage students to start thinking about their contextual studies research. Year 2: Students will gain greater understanding of urban history and theory, urban design, and design for commercial and retail environments, as well as rehabilitation. This will allow them to enhance their practice and develop their approach to their design work. We set briefs that encourage students to collaborate with others and create work as part of a design team. Year 3: Students will bring their learning together in a final negotiated major project, where they will investigate and make architectural design decisions. Alongside this, they will carry out a negotiated project in the form of a live brief. We ask students to show their contextual studies research and thinking in a long form dissertation. Students will leave with a portfolio that shows their skills in areas in entry-level architecture.

Assessment method

Students will be continually assessed through preparation of written and project work. Assessment in the final year is through dissertation and portfolio.
