Course summary

The aim of the Higher National Certificate in Agriculture (Crop Production) is to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed for a successful career in agriculture through a combination of academic study, practical classes, work experience and study visits. Students will develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of Agriculture through core, specialist and optional units which focus on business management, livestock or crop production. Learning and Teaching Approach For all modules, theory lectures are delivered that aim to facilitate the core content and provide the underpinning knowledge. To complement the theory lectures, students have group seminars / practical sessions on the farm and in laboratories that are used to reinforce concepts delivered theoretically. The focus of the teaching approach is to give a model that can be applied in the work place, putting theory into practice and vice versa. The teaching methods focus on facilitating a student centred approach to enhance the independent learning that takes place outside of the classroom. What is the contact time? Approximately 16 hours a week to include lectures, seminars, work experience, practicals and tutorials. Students are also expected to carry out a significant amount of private study in addition to contact time (25-30 hours a week). What else can I expect?

What kind of job can I get when I graduate? On completion, students will be able to go into wide and varied job roles, which could include assistant farm managers, crop technicians, trainee agronomists and agricultural sales persons.

English language requirements

If first language is not English, or a Tier 4 student visa to study is required and GCSE grade C/4 English or equivalent is not held, English language proficiency level such as International English Language Testing System (IELTS) 6.0 overall (with a minimum 5.5 in each skill) will need evidencing.
