Course summary
Our LLM in International Law, Security and Strategic Studies is an interdisciplinary programme which explores how the disciplines impact the prevention, control, and conduct of conflicts in the modern world. With the combined strength of the School of Law and the School of Social Science, this interdisciplinary programme explores the use of force by international and transnational actors to achieve political and security objectives. It allows a focused appreciation of the legal considerations that frame many contemporary conflicts. Students will have the opportunity to develop critical thinking and analytic skills through studying courses such as International Law: A Time of Challenges and Global Security Issues. This programme was designed by experts in the fields of International Law and Strategic Studies. With their combined input, you will gain unique insights into both subjects and will advance your understanding of their relationship. The programme aligns with the interdisciplinary competencies required for today’s job market in international security. **The School of Law is ranked Top 10 in the UK by the Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023. Modules
The LLM in International Law, Security and Strategic Studies will allow you to study international law at an advanced level, preparing you well for a career in international law, governance, and security. Our focus is on developing your ability to think critically about the current problems faced by the world, and how international security affects and is affected by these issues. To allow you to develop these skills, you will undertake five compulsory courses: Getting Started at the University of Aberdeen; International Law: A Time of Challenges; Strategic Theory; Critical Legal Thinking and Scholarship; LLM Dissertation. The remaining credits are gained from the diverse range of optional courses available to you, including international human rights law, international energy security, and the use of force in international law. Please note: Students starting their LLM programme in January write their Dissertation project during the Summer semester.

By course work, by written examination, or by a combination of these, as prescribed for each course.

Entry requirements
Normally, a 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent) in Law will be required to be accepted onto this programme. Relevant practical experience in a related field will also be beneficial.

To study for a postgraduate degree at the University of Aberdeen it is essential that you can speak, understand, read, and write academic English fluently. These skills will allow you to understand lectures, produce high standards of written work, and perform well in examinations. We can assess your English language proficiency through a variety of means: through your nationality, through the qualifications you gained in high school, through the degree you undertook or are undertaking at university, or through a recognised English language test. Postgraduate Higher requirements are used by the Schools of Business; Divinity, History and Philosophy; Education; Language, Literature, Music and Visual Culture; Law; and Social Sciences. The MSc in Oil and Gas Enterprise Management and the MSc in Integrated Petroleum Geoscience also make use of the Postgraduate Higher requirements. Please note certification must be within the two years prior to commencement of your degree programme, unless otherwise stated.

Additional fee information
Tuition fees given are at the full-time rate. The part-time fee rate for taught postgraduate programmes is 50% of the relevant full-time fee rate.
