Course summary

This MSc is highly practical by its very nature. There is a focus on the interpretational skills required to critically evaluate different forms of forensic evidence recovered from exhibits in the laboratory and at the crime scene, based on scenarios. We particularly focus on biological evidence types, such as DNA, blood and other body fluids, you will get an opportunity to make decisions and provide opinions in scenarios based on real life forensic casework. You will also have the opportunity to learn many other skills which are key to the role of the forensic practitioner, such as court room skills and gain knowledge from experienced practitioners that contribute to the teaching on the modules within the MSc. It will also teach the importance of strong and effective communication and expression within their scientific reports, instruction and discussion with colleagues within the forensic laboratory and finally on occasion expression of opinion and good court room awareness and skills if called to explain some scientific points in the case Forensic Biology MSc sits within the Cranfield Forensic Institute at the Bedford campus. This course provides numerous opportunities to gain practical skills both in the laboratory and at the onsite crime scene facilities. There is also a distinct focus on the interpretational and critical thinking skills required by a forensic practitioner in industry. This course will also provide numerous opportunities to gain skills which would be advantageous in a range of laboratory-based careers and other careers in the criminal justice system.


Entry requirements

A first or second class honours degree or equivalent in archaeology, forensic science or scientific discipline, or the professional equivalent. Students with other degrees who can show a knowledge of and interest in the scientific elements of the subject will also be considered.
