Public and Environmental Health

Course summary

This programme provides you with the qualification necessary to embark on a career in Public Health or Environmental Health. It is accredited by The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and so has professional recognition and leads to further professional development if desired. The programme includes modules concerned with food safety, environmental science, pollution, housing standards, health and safety at work, and health promotion. You will study the scientific and legal principles which underpin these aspects in equal measure. The programme includes the ‘practical food inspection’ which is a requirement for anyone aspiring to work in food safety. The course is delivered partly online, and partly in person. There are numerous guest speakers from the professional field, and scenarios are used to replicate professional work. Assessments take varied formats and are aligned to the work of professional practitioners. Graduates are in a strong position to obtain jobs in the public and private sectors across the UK. Graduates may elect to become generalists (doing a bit of everything), or may specialise in one or more areas, for example as food safety officers or housing standards officers. We have great links with the sector’s professional body, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), and this course is taught by lecturers are CIEH accredited. The course is taught in the bespoke laboratories and classrooms at our Knightstone Campus, where you will undertake practical and academic studies of the scientific principles that govern biological, physical, chemical and psychological stressors in a public and environmental health context. You will also enhance your knowledge in preferred areas of professional practice and be encouraged to participate in numerous visits to undertake environmental assessments and audits. In recent years, students have undertaken fieldwork at food manufacturers, power plants, music festivals and quarries.
