Professional Development in Sports Coaching (Taught)

Course summary

This course will enable experienced coaching practitioners from a range of high-performance, educational and voluntary environments to continue to develop their unique coaching practice whilst building their professional network. Teaching staff have extensive experience supporting the development of bespoke learning programmes to develop unique professional skills, whilst working in collaboration with national governing bodies and public service organisations. You’ll develop greater evidence-based appreciation for coaching practice, whilst collaborating with practitioners from a range of sporting disciplines to enrich your student experience. Portfolio projects will be co-designed by you and your academic tutor to personalise content and structure to your learning needs and career aspirations. Alongside this, portfolio design can be completed via collaboration with your employer, CPD mentor or groups of coaches on the programme. Recent students have used this portfolio process to create valuable professional development resources for their workplaces and personal networks, as well as national governing bodies of sport.

Modules

Our modules are developed regularly to reflect student and industry demands, ensuring you’re well prepared to enter skilled employment on graduation. The majority of courses are comprised of both compulsory and optional modules, the latter of which you'll be able to choose from to suit your interests and career goals. Most courses also include work placement learning, to help you gain essential experience for your future. Modules include: Postgraduate Dissertation (MSc only), The Scientific Coach (MSc only), Coaching Work-Based Learning Extended Project (MSc only), Professional Development Portfolio, Coaching Craft, Reflective Practice. Modules are sometimes subject to change. Optional modules change each year - you can attend introductory sessions before deciding which ones to study. Assessment method

At least a 2:2 in a Bachelor’s Degree. Those with significant and current experience in sport coaching, coach education, sport development, or teaching are welcomed.


Entry requirements

All applications will be reviewed on an individual basis but a guide would be a 2:2 classification or better in an undergraduate degree relating to sports coaching, sports science, social science or significant and current experience of sport coaching, coach education, sport development or teaching. All offers are subject to a successful interview.
