Course summary

This established design and making course allows you to create 3D objects and products that shape the world we live in. You will be making furniture and lighting, jewellery and ceramics, applied art, sculpture and much more in specialist wood, metals, ceramics, polymers workshops, using digital technology. Your teaching team are practising designers, makers, artists and researchers. They encourage a diagnostic and investigative approach, which means you have the freedom to find your specialism and graduate with an impressive body of work. For 50 years our graduates have progressed to life-long creative careers, pioneering new approaches to design. They work for brands such as Habitat, Nike and IKEA, exhibit at galleries including the Design Museum and MOMA and have launched companies including Smile Plastics and Gomi. Hands-on practice is integrated with historical and critical studies and live projects and case studies, with opportunities to exhibit your work.

Modules

Introductory experiences are provided through a rotation of the four material areas on offer (wood, metal, ceramics and plastics) and parallel studio assignments. The syllabus also includes: design and craft methodologies; techniques, materials and processes in wood, metal, ceramics and plastics; bespoke, batch and mass manufacture; research and communication; Computer Assisted Design and Computer Assisted Manufacture (CAD/CAM); options to specialise in design, craft and applied art; self-directed study; professional practice and live projects; and historical and critical studies.

Additional fee information

Please note that the £13,842 international fee is for classroom based courses and provisional for 2023. For lab based courses a higher fee of £14,892 applies. EU students will be charged international fees unless they have settled status awarded by the UK Government's Settlement Scheme. Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study and are subject to an annual increase of no more than 5% or RPI (whichever is the greater). The annual increase for UK/EU students, who are subject to regulated fees, will increase no more than the statutory maximum fee. The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full-time or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take. If your course includes a sandwich year option you will pay a reduced fee during this year; £1,370 for home students and £2,120 for international students. You may have to pay additional costs during your studies. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees.
