Course summary

Are you interested in languages with a view to working in a business environment? Do you want to discover more about the history, politics and cultures of the countries where a particular language or languages are spoken? Our Modern Languages with Business degree will equip you with the knowledge, skills and expertise needed throughout your career, and open up opportunities to develop a global career. You will focus the majority of your time upon studying one or two languages to degree level and developing your cultural and historical knowledge of the country or countries where your chosen language(s) are spoken. On this course you will also develop a sound understanding of fundamental business principles and theories. The exciting opportunity of the year abroad develops your communication skills, builds your confidence and helps you stand out to future employers. Depending upon your choice of language(s) you have three options: teaching English in a School; studying at one of our partner universities; or working anywhere your chosen language is spoken. What are my language options?

  • I want to study one language from beginners' level - you may choose German, Russian or Spanish
  • I want to study one language post-A level - you may choose French, German, Russian or Spanish
  • I want to study two languages - you may study French, German, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese*, Serbian/Croatian*. Only one language may be started from beginners' level
  • Portuguese and Serbian/Croatian can only be taken from beginners' level.

Modules

In year one you begin a structured language course in the language or languages of your choice. You are also introduced to the history and culture related to your language(s). A quarter of your studies will be in core business studies modules: Organisational Studies; Consumers and Markets; and Work and Society. In year two, as well as continuing to develop your language skills, you choose topics from a wide range of options in the fields of literature, history, society and culture of the countries where your language or languages are spoken. You will also take optional modules in business. Your will spend your third academic year abroad. You will divide your time between countries where your chosen language(s) are spoken. Depending on where your placement is, you could study at one of our exchange universities, teach on the British Council assistantship programme or undertake a work placement with a company. Options available to you may depend on the details of the Brexit settlement negotiated by the UK government. Your fourth year will be spent back at Nottingham. As well as continuing to develop your language skills, you will choose special topics from a wide range of options in the fields of literature, history, society, and culture of the countries where your language(s) are spoken. Placement and volunteering opportunities are available in the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies, as well as via the Nottingham Advantage Award.

Qualification requirements

European Baccalaureate - 75% overall. If you wish to study one language, choose from French, German, Russian or Spanish post A Level or German, Russian or Spanish beginners. If you wish to study two languages, choose from French, German, Mandarin, Russian or Spanish (post A Level or beginners) or Portuguese and Serbian/Croatian beginners. At least one of your two languages must be one of our post A Level languages (French, German, Mandarin, Russian or Spanish), as you may only include one beginners' language in your programme. Other language qualifications may be considered in the absence of an A Level. Please contact the University for further information.
