Course summary

Our MFA Musical Theatre programme will position you to be industry ready for a professional career as a Musical Theatre performer. This MFA Musical Theatre course is designed to deliver world class actor training for those committed to a professional career in Musical Theatre performance. Over the 18 month course, applicants will have the opportunity to develop their acting, singing, and dance technique, deepen their understanding Musical Theatre on stage and screen, work on new musicals, work with a wide range of musical theatre directors, musical directors, and choreographers, and receive bespoke guidance on developing an 'audition ready' repertoire. Students training on this course will benefit from the opportunity to explore a wide variety of musicals, develop future proof skills, and develop as artists. The first year of the course will culminate in a public-facing musical production and a UK industry facing showcase. The additional elements of the MFA qualification provide a route into teaching or research in musical theatre. Year two will see the you gaining deeper understanding through taught classes and independent research, exploring new trends in Musical Theatre, and gaining a CPD accredited qualification in LAMDA Examinations teaching. Graduates will emerge industry ready 'triple threat' performers, supported with professional career advice, and repertoire of solo songs for future auditions. The course aims to provide a route into professional performance work as an actor in Musical Theatre.

Principal study options

During the application and audition process, you must select which instrument(s) you wish to specialise in for the duration of your course. On this course, you can choose from the following options:

Single specialism

Only one instrument is studied. It may be possible to study a further instrument formatively, but this will not contribute towards the qualification.

Instrument/specialisms

For all courses, you must select at least one specialism from the 'primary' list. For those studying primary/secondary pathways, two instruments may be selected – one from the 'primary' list and one from the 'secondary' list. Joint pathway students may select any two instruments from either list.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have an undergraduate degree or relevant professional experience that has prepared them for advanced Musical Theatre studies. They must demonstrate the ability to study at Masters level. No minimum degree classification is required, since admission is based on audition performance rather than past award classification. The audition process is thorough and seeks to engage those candidates that show an aptitude for the vocational nature of this practice based Masters programme.
