Course summary

The emphasis of this career-focused and topical degree-level course is on interpreting, evaluating and communicating financial information for strategic, managerial and investment purposes. Content is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect new developments and the requirements of the profession, needs of industry and government policy. We will aim to help you develop a critical awareness and understanding of contemporary financial issues and theories relating to corporate finance, financial strategy, emerging markets and behavioural finance. For example, we’ll explore the use of derivatives as hedging/speculative tools and the problems they can cause for companies. If you choose to take the Banking or Investment Management pathways, you will be exposed to sector specific knowledge, which should enhance your expertise in your respective chosen specialism. On our Investment Management pathway, you will have the opportunity to get hands on exposure to leading investment databases, while on our Banking pathway, you can look in depth at the regulation of the banking sector, and how it operates internationally. With the courses aim to enhance your technical, analytical and mathematical skills, you’ll be exposed to the real financial practices and techniques you may encounter working in the finance industry – through investment software and databases like Bloomberg and Datastream. You should learn to value financial assets such as shares, bonds and derivatives and should develop econometric skills to analyse cross-sectional and time series data. We strive to provide you with an international perspective on the world of finance as a range of modules have an international focus – covering risk management, emerging markets and corporate finance. This course can be offered on a part-time basis, with study over two years. Whilst we would like to give you all the information about our part-time offering here, it is tailored for each course each year depending on the number of part-time applicants. Modules

Your main study themes are: - Marketing: Develops a critical understanding of the principles and practice of marketing including environmental analysis, buyer behaviour, strategic market segmentation, targeting and positioning, and the design of marketing mixes. You will examine the value and purpose of marketing across a range of contexts including the private and public sectors both in a service and global context. - Finance: We will help you learn how to interpret and use financial information within the strategic framework of a business oriented toward the user rather than the preparer of corporate financial statements. You will be introduced to the practical tools for assessing financial performance and economic condition of a business, analysing the financial reports of real-world public companies. You should also explore the key concepts of managerial accounting and how to identify relevant costs for short-term and long-term decision making as well as financial and non-financial measures for evaluating the performance of business units or divisions. - Human Resource Management (HRM): Provides an overview of HRM in the context of modern society and modern organisations, reviewing the changing cultural nature of the employment relationship and the potential contribution of HRM to organisational effectiveness and efficiency. We will consider the challenges and opportunities for managers relating to performance, particularly with regards the processes of change, common in any Multinational Enterprise (MNE) as a result of rapid change within the external environment and intensified global competition. We will cover the key concepts, theories and practical applications in change management, taking into consideration cross-cultural management and relevant research in social anthropology, sociology, organisational behaviour, public relations and intercultural communication. - Strategic analysis: Effective strategic choice and management is dependent on widespread and current information and data regarding an organisation’s strategic position. To broaden your perspective and increase your understanding of the principles of strategic management, you will be introduced to a variety of models for strategic analysis and strategy formulation. You should explore the pros and cons of strategic choices and consider the impact of and consequences of strategy implementation. - Managing change across cultures: The aim of the module is to help enhance your ability to perform successful change management processes in MNEs and other organisations operating on the global stage and in particularly to excel in future roles as global managers in multi-culturally diverse contexts. This will be achieved through introducing you to key concepts, theories and practical applications in Change Management in addition to innovatively drawing upon cultural research from both Cross-Cultural Management and more advanced social theoretical advancements in Social Anthropology and Sociology. - Financial risk management: Developing knowledge and expertise to be able to apply alternative hedging methods, use financial derivatives or non-financial derivatives methods, to manage the typical financial risks that companies face in the modern business environment. You should learn to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of alternative methods, considering the situations given, presenting a critique of the theoretical explanations for corporate hedging. - Corporate finance: Although we do cover some of the fundamental fields of finance, including Portfolio Theory, Capital Asset Pricing, Valuation or Risk Management, our primary focus is to examine and discuss some of the more controversial issues in corporate finance, for example in the area of behavioural finance or management team compensation. Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a good honours degree 2:2 or above in a relevant academic discipline. Applicants with a degree in another discipline or with relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis.
