Course summary
This module will enable students to understand the role of EEG in the management of adults and children. It covers two strands of neurophysiology practice
- EEG on the intensive care unit
- Paediatric EEG
- Uses of Long-term EEG
- EEG on the intensive care unit: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiology and management of patients with altered mental status, and clinical uses of continuous EEG monitoring in intensive care units.
- Paediatric EEG: Demonstrate the ability to critically appraise the pathophysiology, clinical presentation and electroencephalographic findings in paediatric epileptic syndromes and paediatric metabolic manifestations on the central nervous system.
- Long-term EEG: Critically analyse the clinical applications of ambulatory recordings and video-telemetry in adult and childhood seizure disorders. Apply integrative understanding of normal and abnormal sleep and its assessment.
Assessment method
Assessment is by two pieces of coursework submitted throughout the course.
Entry requirements
Candidates should be employed in clinical neurophysiology departments or related services. Knowledge of basic EEG and a minimum of 6 months of experience using the technique are essential requirements.
