Language is a fundamental part of what makes us human, but how often do we stop and think about it? It’s a crucial tool for us to be able to comprehend and communicate our understanding of the world around us, demanding discipline, observation and imagination. Sound interesting? Designed to delve into the varieties and histories of the English language, this course will give you the training you need to understand how the written and spoken word is structured and acquired. Analysing the English language from a range of perspectives, you’ll also explore how linguistics vary across regions, and how language helps us to form our identities and influence social change. Modules
The flexible structure of this course is designed to give you a thorough foundation in English language in the first year of study, and then to allow you to specialise or to study the full breadth of the subject in the second and third years. This flexibility allows you to tailor your degree to suit your developing interests and career goals. The course covers a range of aspects of the study of language including topics specific to the description of English. You can also choose to study ‘outside’ modules in English Literature and Creative Writing, as well as a modern foreign language. This can be an excellent opportunity to develop a broad range of skills that will further enhance your employability. If you are interested in broadening your academic experience, this course also offers you the opportunity to undertake language study as part of the University Wide Language Programme (UWLP). Languages currently on offer include Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and British Sign Language.
