Course summary

Take charge of your career by building on your undergraduate degree. You will develop your professional skills and prepare for professional practice at a senior level. The course covers research, development and practice in advanced engineering design. Using the most advanced CAD packages, you will learn the techniques to analyse and test your designs. And then move onto full design implementation. Our teaching staff have exceptional knowledge and expertise in their fields. They include world-leaders in research on sustainable engineering, materials and joining technology. Teaching is centred around our state-of-the-art laboratories in a purpose-designed engineering building. We are located in the heart of one of Europe’s highest concentration of high-tech businesses. Our close industry links enable us to organise site visits which allow you to explore technical challenges and the latest technology.

Assessment method

The course is structured around three periods: Semester 1 runs from September to December Semester 2 from January to May the summer period completes the year until the beginning of September. To qualify for a master's degree you must pass 180 module credits, including the dissertaion.

International applicants

This course has a subject classification which requires students whose nationality is outside the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland to have an ATAS certificate, irrespective of country of residence at the point of application.

Entry requirements

Specific entry requirements You should normally hold a first degree equivalent to at least a British lower second-class bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline. Applicants with relevant professional experience will also be considered. Please also see the University's general entry requirements. English language requirements If your first language is not English you will require a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 overall with 6.0 in all components. OR An equivalent English language qualification acceptable to the University
