Course summary

Occupational therapy is a client-centred profession dedicated to promoting health and wellbeing through occupation. Occupational therapists assist individuals in participating in activities they want, need, and are expected to engage in by adapting either the occupation or the environment to enhance their health and wellbeing. This course is designed to equip you with the skills needed to meet the contemporary needs of diverse populations and apply them in settings aligned with your interests. The programme is accredited by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists and the Health and Care Professions Council. Throughout this course, you will:

  • Combine academic study with practice placements to develop a broad range of professional and personal skills.
  • Learn through Universal Design for Learning (UDL), which fosters purposeful, motivated, resourceful, knowledgeable, goal-directed, and strategic learners.
  • Be taught by Occupational Therapists with diverse clinical backgrounds, who are involved with professional bodies, research active, and accredited with Advance HE.
  • Benefit from strong connections with service users, clinical experts, and industry partners, ensuring you are well-prepared for the demands of current practice.
  • Engage in simulation as a core component of your learning, including the use of on-site skill suites, online resources, and case studies.
  • Become eligible for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council upon successful completion of the programme.

Modules

  • Year one: The Occupational Therapist, Valuing Occupation, Putting Occupational Therapy into Practice A, Putting Occupational Therapy into Practice B, and Integrating Theory, Evidence and Practice 1.
  • Year two: Integrating Theory, Evidence and Practice 2, Promoting Occupational Therapy, Advancing Occupational Therapy, and Autonomous Practice.

Assessment method

To meet HCPC standards and register as an occupational therapist, you must pass all assessments and complete 1000 hours of placement. Assessments are guided by Universal Design principles to accommodate diverse learning needs and may include:

  • Essays/reports: Written assignments reflecting professional reports or traditional essays, demonstrating knowledge and communication skills.
  • Critically appraised topics and research proposals/reports: Assess skills in evaluating and synthesising research and applying methodologies.
  • Presentations/vivas: Various formats such as pre-recorded or live presentations, vivas, professional conversations, and pitches.
  • Production of creative work: Opportunities to present learning through video, audio, posters, etc., with academic justification.
Practical assessments include demonstrations of skills and competencies, such as clinical examinations and practice-based scenarios. A portfolio supports life-long learning and includes reflections and evidence of skill acquisition. Four placements are integral to the programme, assessed as pass/fail, and must be completed for progression.

Entry requirements

We require a 2:1 or above in your previous first degree, which should have been completed within the last five years. Additionally, you need GCSE Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent qualifications.
