Course summary
The BSc (Hons) Finance with Accounting with Foundation and Placement Years is aimed at students who have an interest in developing knowledge and understanding of the key aspects of finance and accounting, and in particular, who are looking to pursue a professional career in finance. It seeks to give students a learning experience that allows them to develop proficiencies that create effective finance professionals in today’s changing business environment. The curriculum and learning and teaching strategy are complemented by guest lectures and ‘live’ workshops to promote independent learning and increasing their employability skills for the future. This knowledge and skills will be further developed and expanded in the years following successful completion of the Foundation Year. The degree programme is designed so that the Foundation Year provides an underpinning year, incorporating both academic and work/professional related learning, for applicants needing to improve their knowledge and understanding of management and its related skills. The year provides students with knowledge and understanding of the key aspects of social sciences along with the necessary skills needed to participate in the undergraduate business programmes at levels 4, 5 and 6. This includes developing numeracy skills with the aim to develop students’ mathematical knowledge and skills in a way which encourages confidence and appreciation of mathematics as a subject and providing students with the mathematical background necessary for business studies at undergraduate level. The Foundation Year also offers a literacy skills module that is designed to support students entering Higher Education at Level 3 wishing to progress to a BSc in Finance with Accounting. Year 1 provides you with a good understanding of the foundations of finance and accounting alongside the fundamentals of business. Years 2 and 3 gives you in-depth knowledge of how companies use finance and accounting to make decisions, report performance under conditions of uncertainty and risk. The programme provides the intellectual underpinnings required for a professional career in a rapidly changing work environment, a rigorous approach to self-awareness and personal development and a significant exposure to the world of work and its current demands through work experience opportunities. This degree is ideal for those interested in a future professional career in finance, M&A and trading. It offers an excellent grounding in finance and acts as a foundation for further study in accounting or finance at postgraduate or professional level.
Modules
In Term 1 students study; • Communication Skills • Digital and Research Skills • Sustainabilty and Society In Term 2 the students will study; • Foundation Year Project • Core Concepts of Business • One option from the following: Core Concepts of Computer Science; Core Concepts of Criminology and Policy; Core Concepts of Law Core Concepts of Psychology. The first year will consist of six compulsory modules: • Essentials of Management (20) • Academic and Employability Skills (20) • Managing and Leading People (20) • Financial Accounting (20) • Data Analysis (20) • Managing Accounting (20) PLEASE NOTE Students who may want to take LLB modules as electives will undertake one law module (Common Law Method) on a pass/fail system (i.e. non credit-bearing) over the summer between Year One and Year Two. Students will need to pass the module before undertaking the LLB modules. The second year will consist of six compulsory modules: Three modules on Semester 1: • Ethics and Regulations in Finance and Accounting (20) • Economics for Business (20) • Finances (20) Three modules on Semester 2: • Introduction to Taxation (20) • Business Law 1 (20) • Management Accounting for Business (20) Students who select to undertake a placement year in industry will spend the penultimate year of their BSc programme working for an organisation under academic supervision. This supervised work placement will connect them with the employment market. Students will gain job-related skills, awareness of the structure of an organisation, practical problem-solving, responsibility, interpersonal skills in professional settings, and understanding of the unwritten rules of workplaces. They will have the opportunity to reflect on their learning, supervised by an academic supervisor. They will also enrich their CVs with important practical experience. Level 6 will consist of six compulsory modules: Three Modules on Semester 1: • International Strategic Management (20) • Financial Reporting (20) • Corporate Finance (20) Three core modules on Semester 2: • Advanced Taxation (20) • Audit (20) • Advanced Financial Reporting (20)
Assessment method
Assessment is designed to meet the programme and module learning outcomes both academically and professionally in formative form including the preparation and feedback from seminars, workshops, tests and presentations, as well as in summative assessments that contributes to the grade, including individual coursework, group work, projects, in-class presentations, and exams. In particular, as is usual in the sector, this programme involves a considerable amount of group work and group assessment, i.e., as much as 50% of the assessment on selected modules may take this form.
