Course summary

Fintech is rapidly becoming an established new finance paradigm. It is a fusion of finance and technology to create new, more dynamic services and a new set of financial assets. This course will critically assess the operations, benefits and issues with cryptoassets such as cryptocurrencies, tokens as well as more traditionally based innovations such as digital only banks and payments systems. The course will give students an understanding of the main technical analysis techniques, for example machine learning and python programming, used throughout the fintech world. A wide range of cryptoassets, specifically cryptocurrencies, NFTs, crypto exchanges are analysed from a technology (ie blockchain, cryptography) perspective and a real world practical use perspective; Principles of modern finance are taught as a critical base for understanding finance in general and fintech specifically; A 3rd semester fintech based project in co-operation with The Generator, the University’s entrepreneurial team, gives students an opportunity to develop and pursue their own crypto projects.

Assessment method

Student performance in the modules will be assessed by a blend of exams and coursework.


Entry requirements

A relevant numerate undergraduate degree at 2:2 or above, or equivalent qualification from a university or higher education institution.
