Course summary

Actuarial Science brings together mathematical, statistical and financial techniques to minimise financial risk in areas such as commerce, insurance, finance and government, and this new degree could lead to highly rewarding careers in fields such as insurance, annuities, and pensions. Actuarial salaries begin at £30,000 and can progress to six figures. The programme will provide a solid training aligned with the Core Principles syllabus of Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. Depending on the grades obtained, completion of the degree programme can lead to a recommendation for exemption from some or all of CS1, CS2, CM1, CM2, CB1, and CB2. As a student, you will be taught in our £32.5m Computational Foundry, a world class centre with state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research, as well as networking and meeting spaces, to help prepare you for a successful and rewarding career. The programme will be delivered by the Department of Mathematics in conjunction with the School of Management, both located on the Bay Campus. This course will give you a solid training highly aligned with that required for entrance to the actuarial profession – a career which is financially rewarding, highly sought after and a ‘passport’ to working in the global environment. It will cover topics such as: calculus, analysis, algebra, applied statistics, accounting for business, economics for accounting and finance, real analysis and metric spaces, vector calculus and measure theory, groups and rings, probability, financial accounting, investments, assets, equities and bonds, complex variables, stochastic processes, financial mathematics, stochastic processes and survival models, and actuarial models and interest rates. We guarantee that you will be made a conditional offer for a course at Swansea University. Subject requirements will apply. Please come along to our next Open Day or get in touch for further information.

Modules

Teaching block one (TB1) runs from September until January and during this block, for this year, this course will be taught in a ‘blended’ way. This means that some teaching will be done online and some will be on campus. The online teaching, where you will be physically apart from your lecturer, can be ‘live’ with your lecturer present and where you’ll be able to interact. Some of it may be self-directed which means that you can access the learning materials at a time to suit you.

Sponsorship information

The Mathematics Department will offer prizes/scholarships worth up to a total of £3000 for students starting their university studies in September. The prizes will be awarded on the basis of a competitive two and a half hour examination which will be taken during the Spring. Usually, applicants take the exam in their school or college, but this year arrangements will be made to enable applicants to sit the exam remotely. If you would like to take the exam, you will need to make Mathematics at Swansea one of your UCAS selections. These scholarships can be used in conjunction with our Excellence and Merit scholarships. If you are interested in taking the scholarship exam, then you should complete and return a Mathematics Scholarship Application us via email. https://www.swansea.ac.uk/maths/scholarships/ Note: The University will also award Excellence Bursaries worth £3,000 to students who achieve AAA at A-level (or equivalent) and £2000 to students who achieve AAB at A level (or equivalent).
