Course summary
Climate change, pollution and unsustainable fishing are just some of the many challenges facing marine life. Join the fight to protect precious and complex ocean ecosystems by building relevant knowledge and skills to make a difference with our BSc (Hons) Marine Biology degree. Our oceans are filled with delicate ecosystems and amazing wildlife - but all of this is in danger. With COP26 highlighting the greater need for action to address the human impact on precious ecosystems, seize this opportunity to build the knowledge skills to manage and preserve our oceans and have a positive impact on our natural world. Build in-demand scientific knowledge and skills Accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, our course will help you to build knowledge of key biological processes including biodiversity and ecosystems. You will initially focus on understanding biodiversity, global distribution of wildlife, genetics and ecosystems. As you progress, you will expand your subject knowledge to explore ocean challenges, animal evolution and freshwater biology. In your final year, you will complete a research project based on a subject topic of your choice and study modules in fisheries science, marine management and marine biotechnology. Get closer to industry Focusing on real-world issues, you will balance theoretical learning with practical skill building, both in our Bodmer Laboratories on campus and through UK and international residential field trips. Previous visits include the National Fisheries Research Institute at places such as the renowned FSC Millport Field Station in Scotland. On this course, you will have the option to include an industry placement between years two and three. Previous Marine Biology students have experience placements with Operation Wallacea (various destinations worldwide) and Archipelagos (Greece), studying charismatic animals like sea turtles and marine mammals.
