Course summary

Respiratory medicine is an increasingly important field of medicine, as respiratory disease is a growing cause of morbidity and mortality. The MSc Respiratory Medicine is an online course, run with our collaborative partner Diploma MSc. It allows you to explore and study the major classes of respiratory disease, conduct research in respiratory medicine and have a direct opportunity to improve patient care. Both the Postgraduate Diploma and MSc courses are aimed at Doctors, GPs, Allied Health Professionals, Practice Nurses or equivalent professional qualifications and background experience. Completion of the MSc Respiratory Medicine course will enhance private practice and will help career progression.

Modules

This Masters course has been developed for health professionals who are interested in a leadership roles within Respiratory Medicine. The MSc Respiratory Medicine aims to create professionals who can independently access information and use the information to critically assess, evaluate and disseminate the evidence base related to Respiratory Medicine. It will develop problem-solving and clinical skills together with preparing students to take a leadership role in Respiratory Medicine. MSc: One-year duration Students progressing from the PG Diploma course do the one-year MSc consisting of the following modules: Core •Research Methodologies and Critical Appraisal in Respiratory Medicine (20 credits) Optional •Professional project: Respiratory Medicine (dissertation) (40 credits) •Independent Prescribing (40 credits) MSc: Two-year duration Students who decide to enrol directly on to the MSc (rather than the PG Dip) will do the two-year version, which consists of the following modules: Core •Respiratory medicine – Symptoms, signs and investigations (20 credits) •Asthma and Allergy (20 credits) •Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (20 credits) •Thoracic oncology and pleural disease (20 credits) •Wider Respiratory Horizons (20 credits) •Other important respiratory conditions and diseases (20 credits) •Research Methodologies and Critical Appraisal in Respiratory Medicine (20 credits) Optional •Professional project: Respiratory Medicine (dissertation) (40 credits) or •Independent Prescribing (40 credits) On completion of the course, you will be able to: •Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the care of patients in respiratory medicine. •Critically understand current issues affecting the care of patients undertaking respiratory treatments. •Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of respiratory medicine that will facilitate decision-making in unpredictable and/or complex situations. •Use knowledge to adapt professional practice to meet the changing demands of healthcare systems. •Apply knowledge of the wide range of therapies available to select the appropriate management choices for patients in clinical practice. •Demonstrate in depth knowledge and understanding of the scientific basis for therapeutics in the treatment and management of respiratory disease. •Critically evaluate information on emerging treatment pathways, including drug and non-drug therapies relevant to respiratory medicine.

Assessment method

The learning environment will be provided through Moodle. You will have access to student services with Diploma MSc (Learna LTD) and you will also have access to all the online facilities in accordance with University of South Wales regulations.


Entry requirements

Entry to the MSc Respiratory Medicine programme will require the successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Respiratory Medicine (120 credits) either from the University of South Wales or from another UK University. Alternatively, students may apply for the MSc as a two year course, completing all 8 modules (180 credits). Applicants should submit copies of the following with their application: •Qualification certificates •One written reference.
