  • Learn through rigorous, practical, skills-based classes, balanced with research and analysis.
  • Develop a repertoire of acts for different audiences and create a full-length ensemble show that tours UK venues.
Become a creative artist who can draw on a variety of circus skills and apply them to a portfolio career. This Top-up year course is offered to students who successfully complete Circomedia’s two year circus Foundation degree, or applicants who have an equivalent qualification in a similar area and can demonstrate a suitable level of skill. It allows you to take your initial training further, and graduates will be awarded a BA (Hons) Contemporary Circus with Physical Theatre. Professionally experienced staff foster creative approaches to performance-making and encourage entrepreneurialism. You’ll create your own portfolio of work during the course, and undertake rigorous practical training balanced with research and analysis. Our industry links with companies such as Ockham’s Razor, Cirque Bijou and Gandini Juggling embed industry practice and standards in all classes.

The BA year is about drawing together everything you’ve learned, exploring it, refining it and developing it into something presentable in a professional context. Everything you’ll do is geared towards practical industry experience and preparing for a career as a circus theatre artist. You’ll create a portfolio of work that has particular professional markets in mind, and critically evaluate your work within this context. You’ll experience a realistic industry environment as you create a full-length production that tours a variety of venues in the UK. The Practice As Research module will encourage you to question your own processes and encourage you to holistically integrate your technical training and creative practice. This research feeds into your final project, where we challenge you to make a major piece of work for public performance, document the process and be able to articulate, analyse and interrogate your creative ideas in a viva-voce presentation.
