Music and Music Technology at University of Nottingham - UCAS

Course summary

The impact of digital is continually changing the way we compose, collaborate, share and showcase music. You'll explore this impact through both theory and practice. All students get a solid grounding in key repertoire and historical contexts. You will also get practical experience in:

  • studio and location recording
  • composing with digital audio workstations
  • music production
  • sound to picture
  • synthesis
  • sampling
  • sound design
  • collaboration
  • performance
Our staff are current performers and technicians so you'll be working to the latest industry-standards. Build a degree that suits your interests. You can specialise in musicology, performance, composition or technology or explore widely across our diverse mix of modules. You could combine Early Music with Electroacoustic Composition or Conducting with Studio Recording. Our facilities support your choices. We have purpose-built spaces to compose, rehearse, perform, record and experiment! We encourage collaboration between students and joining up work across modules. There are also opportunities to get involved in staff projects. The opportunities to perform are almost endless with:
  • student ensembles
  • on-course collaboration
  • university-wide orchestra and choir
  • the city's dynamic music scene
Combine with another subject You may also combine Music with Philosophy in our joint honours programme, or study it alongside multiple disciplines in our Liberal Arts BA.

Modules

The first year develops your core knowledge of theory, and performance with the aesthetics and application of technology. You'll also be able to choose optional modules will allow you to begin exploring special interests. You can also choose to study other subjects (perhaps approaching a music topic from another angle), learn a language or explore an unrelated passion. In year two your core module will focus on digital music theory and how the latest technology can help you compose, create and manipulate audio. Your choice of optional modules allow you to build on existing interests or explore new ones. You can gain professional experience with our Work Placement module, and take up to 20 credits in other subjects. Many year two modules are also offered as year three options. In year three, your core modules develop your specialised knowledge and skills in production and recording.
