Why study this course? Preparing you for the new Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), this course replaces the postgraduate diploma in Legal Practice (commonly referred to as the LPC) as the new route for becoming a solicitor. Designed for law graduates looking to practise law, you’ll gain the additional skills, knowledge and essential preparation in order to complete the SQE Part One examination. More about this course This postgraduate certificate in Professional Legal Practice prepares you to take the first part of the new Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), which replaces the Legal Practice Course (LPC) route to practising law. Centrally managed by educational establishment KAPLAN, the SQE route consists of two assessments followed by proof of two years’ practical experience. Find out more about the SQE route into law. [link to routes into law webpage - waiting on sign off] Providing you with the functioning legal knowledge subjects as set by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, this course will prepare you to take the first exam of the two SQE assessments. You’ll gain a comprehensive understanding and in-depth knowledge of various legal issues, so that you’re confidently able to analyse complex problems and make informed decisions to resolve them. Assessment You’ll be assessed on this course via two multiple-choice tests. The syllabus and assessments mirror those of the professional examinations, as they reflect the assessment of the centralised SQE Part One examination.

Example modules include: SQE Functioning Legal Knowledge Part One (core, 30 credits); SQE Functioning Legal Knowledge Part Two (core, 30 credits).

Assessment method

The modules on this course will be assessed by two multiple-choice tests, to reflect the assessment regime of the centralised SQE Part One examination. The assessment strategy is designed to provide formative feedback on a piece of contributing summary assessment before another summative component is due to be submitted.


Entry requirements

You’ll be required to have: a lower second-class (2.2) or higher undergraduate UK law degree* or have passed the Graduate Diploma in Law having obtained average marks 50% or above; an IELTs score of 6.5 or above as a standard entry requirement for law courses. *A UK law degree must include having adequately passed assessments in the seven Foundations of Legal Knowledge: Public Law, Obligations I (Contract), Obligations II (Tort), Criminal Law, Land Law, Equity and Trusts and Law of the European Union. All applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Applicants who require a Student visa may need to provide a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS.
