This Tourism Management course is aimed at existing industry professionals seeking to optimise their career potential and provides flexible study and pricing options allowing you to achieve your educational aspirations without compromising work and family commitments. Designed in consultation with regional and national businesses operating in a range of sectors across the tourism industry this programme gives you the opportunity to develop your operational and strategic knowledge in the management of tourism related businesses and obtain a highly relevant qualification at post graduate level. The MBA also provides you with the opportunity to focus on a particular sector of industry through the provision of specialist modules at Diploma level. Course Overview Located at our Ambleside Campus, in the heart of the Lake District, and a UNESCO Heritage site, your learning experience is embedded into one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, providing insights into best practice and the opportunity to work with some of the most innovative and creative businesses in the region. Our strategic partnerships with Cumbria Tourist Board, the Lake District China Forum and the Lake District Hotels Association, alongside our wider national and international industry links provides you with access to the latest data and information impacting on the tourism industry in the region. The course consists of three distinct but integrated stages: PG Certificate – The Certificate Stage provides the key knowledge and skills associated with the management of the visitor experience and the need for innovation and the development of a unique offering in today’s competitive environment. PG Diploma – The Diploma Stage discusses the contemporary strategic challenges and issues confronting organisations in the tourism industry and allows you to focus on a key sector of knowledge and expertise in order to enhance your employability. Masters – the final stage of the MBA develops your applied research skills and competences, and includes a capstone project working in consultation with industry to address real world challenges and problems.

Assessment method

As indicated in the Programme Delivery Structure provided later in the document the PG Cert provides you with a diversity of assessment methods, all of which are applied in nature and can be considered in the context of a real-world environment. For you, this could be in your existing place of work, or in conjunction with an industry partner. All module assessment draws on current academic and real world thinking, ensuring your engagement with industry partners and the potential to develop your employability in terms of key skills and knowledge. Destination marketing, for example requires the creation of a bid document for a location or company. Managing the visitor experience considers the service encounter in a tourism related business and the management interventions necessary throughout a given time period. The combination of industry input that is embedded through visits and guest lecturers, the research experience of the tutors, and your professional opinion and expertise provides the relevance and the reality of your programme experience. The application of theoretical constructs in real-world environments ensures that your assessments are appropriately challenging at level 7 and promote the critical, analytical and creative thinking you need to function effectively as a manager in the tourism industry. The programme design in terms of online support and face to face delivery in 3-day blocks ensures that your assessments are distributed throughout the academic year. Module support and guidance throughout the duration of your programme ensures that you are provided with a number of opportunities for summative and formative feedback with the provision of constructive comments intended to enhance your assessment performance going forward.


Entry requirements

Applications should have a 1st or 2nd class honours degree plus a minimum or 2 years relevant industry experience. Applications should be made online directly to the university. Acceptance on the programme is subject to interview with the Programme Leader.
