Psychology provides insights that help us to understand the behaviour of people in business and organisational contexts. Accredited by the Association for Business Psychology, our BSc Business Psychology uses knowledge of the human mind and our behaviour as a basis to investigate fundamental organisational functions, such as human resource management, finance, marketing, strategy and technology. You will learn how psychological theories and research can be applied successfully to recruit, select and assess employees; change organisations; train and motivate people; and develop individuals’ careers. Assessment method

Examinations are held for approximately half of the assessments; the rest are assessed by coursework in the form of essays, typically 2000-3000 words in length, and case studies, presentations, group work and in-course tests. Research reports are required for the methods teaching. The final research project is assessed 100% by coursework.

International applicants

If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests. If you don’t meet the minimum IELTS requirement, we offer pre-sessional English courses, foundation programmes and language support services to help you improve your English language skills and get your place at Birkbeck.

GCSE/National 4/National 5 Applicants will normally be expected to have five GCSEs at grade C or grade 4 or above, including mathematics.

We welcome applicants without traditional entry qualifications as we base decisions on our own assessment of qualifications, knowledge and previous work experience. We may waive formal entry requirements based on judgement of academic potential. ALTERNATIVE ENTRY ROUTES Access to Higher Education Diploma with a minimum of 15 credits achieved at Merit or Distinction in business or accountancy units. The Certificate of Higher Education in Management offers an entry route to the Department’s undergraduate programmes. This Certificate has now been withdrawn, but if you have already successfully complete designated modules to an appropriate standard please contact the Department for details of module exemptions. The Certificate of Higher Education in Higher Education Introductory Studies (Business pathway) also offers an entry route.

Institutions Own Test (IOT)

Applicants who do not have five GCSEs at grade C or grade 4 or above, including mathematics, may be required to carry out a skills audit at a selection evening, which comprises English and mathematics. This audit assesses an applicant’s potential to cope with, and benefit from, a particular programme of study.
