Course summary

BA Fine Art Painting at Camberwell College of Arts encourages you to explore the medium. You will be invited to embrace possibilities for its continued reinvention and consider its connection with social, cultural and political change. This specialist studio-based course focusses on understanding the methods and techniques of painting. You will learn about how the histories of painting and today’s cultures inform ways painting is positioned in a contemporary context. What to expect • To study the practice of painting, its history, culture and contemporary position • To make work in a specialist studio environment and develop an ethical studio practice • To express and explore your artistic, social and personal interests informed by focussed research • To discuss your work through tutorials, seminars, group and cross-course crits • Painting methods and materials workshops and demonstrations by artists and technicians. Some of these will be with our partners across London. These include Dulwich Picture Gallery and Tate Conservation • Opportunities to gain knowledge and experience of collaborative working and socially engaged art practice • A contextual studies programme. This will give you a deeper understanding of contemporary Fine Art practice. It will widen your critical, theoretical, historical knowledge • To choose between a final year dissertation, performance, practical work placement or live project • To take part in an external exhibition. This will be with students from across Camberwell's BA Fine Art programme • A Fine Art lecture series. This is for all Camberwell undergraduate students studying Drawing, Painting, Photography, Sculpture and Computational Arts • Subject specific lectures, seminars and field trips • To have access to printmaking, photography, film, moving image, digital, plastic, ceramics, wood and metalwork. This enables our students to think of painting in its most expanded form and its relationship to other art forms.
