Course summary

This programme will provide you with an advanced introduction to sociology and you will develop a critical understanding of the discipline. WHY THIS PROGRAMME

  • This programme will develop your knowledge of the different theoretical and analytical approaches in sociology, together with knowledge of empirical studies in social research, while enabling you to focus in depth upon particular areas of sociology.
  • You will also be given some research methods training.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE You will take two core and four optional courses. You will also produce a sustained account of research in a chosen area, and conduct empirical research in that area, through a dissertation project. Core Courses CURRENT ISSUES IN SOCIAL THEORY RESEARCH DESIGN Optional Courses A PUBLIC SOCIAL SCIENCE FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE. CLASS AND STRATIFICIATION GENDER RELATIONS (CONTEMPORARY CRITICAL APPROACHES) IMPROVING HEALTH AND SOCIETY: PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL THEORY FOR RESEARCHERS SEXUALITIES AND SOCIETYTHE DISABLING SOCIETY You will need to take at least three courses from this list. One additional course may be chosen from other subjects within the School of Social & Political Sciences.

Entry requirements

2.1 Honours degree or non-UK equivalent in a relevant social science or humanities subject. International students with academic qualifications below those required should contact our partner institution, Glasgow International College, who offer a range of pre-Masters courses.
