Course summary

"This ESRC-recognised research training programme will provide you with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the concepts, tools and methods of modern economics and their application to the analysis of economic problems. We will give you the training necessary for a career as an economist in the public or private sector or to undertake independent research. We’re ranked Top 20 in the UK for Economics and Econometrics (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022). Southampton also has one of the largest and most active econometric theory groups in the UK and a long-standing reputation in macroeconomics and microeconomic theory."

Assessment method

Some modules are assessed exams, coursework, projects, or essays. Exams are held at the end of each semester.


How to apply

International applicants

If English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate your English is at our Band C level - IELTS 6.5 overall, with minimum 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking. For information on other accepted English language tests, please see the website.

Entry requirements

First- or upper second-class degree or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University in economics or a related subject with a high Maths content. Please see course page online for full entry requirements.
