Course summary

Our PhD/MPhil Biochemistry programme enables you to undertake a research project that will improve understanding of Biochemistry. A biochemical approach aims to understand the chemical processes that occur in plants and animals. It forms the basis for investigating the function and properties of molecules, cells, tissues and whole organisms, under normal and abnormal conditions and in response to their changing environment. Examples include:

  • Cell membrane and cell wall structure and function;
  • Intracellular trafficking of proteins & organelles;
  • Regulation of metabolism in healthand disease;
  • Protein structural analysisand relationship to protein function;
  • Transcriptionaland post-transcriptional regulation in prokaryoticand eukaryotic cells;
  • Cellular recognitionand interactions;
  • Protein secretionand post-translational processing;
  • Molecular analysis of cellular stress responses;
  • Signal transductionand intracellular signalling mechanisms;
  • Macromolecular assembliesand cell function.
