The purpose of BTEC Higher Nationals in Engineering is to develop you as a professional, self-reflecting individuals so that you can meet the demands of employers in the rapidly evolving engineering sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualifications also aim to widen access to Higher Education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them. Successful completion of the HNC (Year One) entitles you to study a further year to gain a Level 5 HND in Engineering (Year Two). Course Structure On this two year HND course at HSDC South Downs, you will study the following units: Year One (HNC): · Engineering Design · Engineering Science · Engineering Mathematics · Managing a Professional Engineering Project Plus, a combination of four more units from: · Automation, Robotics and PLC · Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines · Electrical Machines · Quality and Process Improvement · Production Engineering for Manufacture · Electrical & Electronic Principles · Mechanical Principles Year Two (HND): · Research Project · Professional Engineering Management · Lean Manufacturing · Further Mathematics Plus, a combination of three more units from: · Virtual Engineering · Advanced Manufacturing Technology · Industrial Systems · Industrial Power, Electronics and Storage · Advanced Mechanical Principles This level of study requires additional hours allocated each week outside of college for research and writing reports. You will be required to attend college for three days a week. On successful completion of Year One HNC, students can progress on to Year Two HND Engineering. Teaching and Learning Classes are informal and incorporate a variety of teaching and learning methods e.g. discussion, lectures, group work and practical sessions. The course will be delivered over two years as a full time course, over three days a week. Assessment Assessment is made through completion of assignment-based activities, reports, coursework, practical work, independent study and research. Each unit is marked at Pass, Merit or Distinction grade and these will be used to calculate a final overall grade for the qualification. Industry Links The course has been designed with local employer needs in mind and can be used as part of a Levy-Funded Higher Apprenticeship. Progression Following the completion of this course, you can progress to a top-up degree at university or Degree Apprenticeship. Career destinations include Design Engineers, Electrical or Electronic Engineers and Mechanical Engineers. Entry Criteria If you have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following: – Grade 9 – 4 in GCSE Mathematics – a sound mathematical ability is essential – A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering – A Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in relevant subjects such as Mathematics, Physics etc. About Us Our campus has a range of modern facilities to enhance students learning experience including music recording studios, gym facilities, a nursery, to our own working restaurant and beauty salon and much more. There are frequent buses from the surrounding areas and local train stations in Havant and Cosham. Located off Junction 4 of the A3(M), the College has free onsite parking.
