Take your first steps into the exciting, expanding and evolving world of beauty with our FD Beauty Communication and Promotion course. Recent changes in consumer behaviour and an increase in online purchasing of cosmetics and beauty products are driving a demand for digital marketing, along with a need for visual content creation and all kinds of interactive retail. In 2020 there was a 54% increase in online purchasing of beauty products and, consequently, digital and social advertising spending by cosmetics companies has also increased. That trend has also fuelled greater use of influencer marketing strategies and interactive retail and technology, such as virtual reality for beauty rooms and consultation and exclusive digital product promotion launches. This course focuses on developing the specialist skills that are in increasing demand by the fast paced and exhilarating global beauty industry to identify fashion and beauty trends, create content for visual platforms and promote ideas to a consumer audience. About the course Our programme blends academic study with industry insight to provide a comprehensive understanding of the fashion and beauty industry. We encourage professional development so, as you study, you’ll gain industry experience. You will learn specialist skills from our experienced lecturers such as copy writing for a variety of platforms, trend forecasting, visual communication and the marketing and promotion of beauty brands and products. You’ll have opportunities to work on developing beauty campaigns, marketing and promoting an event and on live briefs set by employers from the fashion and beauty industry. Throughout the programme you will experience demonstrations, lectures, digital skills development, discussions and presentations, while building your professional portfolio. You will be part of the wider Creative arts department at University Centre Leeds where we foster a collaborative ethos through our Creative Arts Network platform and social events. You will have opportunities to make contacts and collaborate with other creative students from media makeup, photography, performance, graphics, film and art backgrounds to elevate your projects and learn to work as part of a creative team.

Modules

Our modules focus on practical skills development and may include: Level 4 Content Writing – 20 credits This module will introduce you to the fundamental writing skills and processes involved in creating prose for a range of beauty and fashion communication and promotion platforms. Visual Communication – 20 credits Learn how to communicate successfully with an audience while considering how the decisions you make with image, type and layout impact the message of your campaigns. This module will introduce you to visual communication and get you to begin to consider how your work connects with an audience. Creative Professional – 20 credits This module is an introduction to what it is to be a creative professional and to the breadth of roles and career opportunities within the fashion and beauty industry. Commercial Practice – 20 credits Throughout this module you will develop ideas to produce a commercially viable outlet for your work within the beauty sector which reflects current practice and your career aspirations within the beauty communication and promotion industry. Beauty Communication and Promotion in Context – 20 credits This module will help you to identify how social and cultural issues throughout the history of fashion and beauty have shaped the industry we see today. Creative Direction for Advertising & Editorial – 20 credits Develop the skills throughout this module to navigate the creative process of forming visual outcomes. Taking creative direction for styling and presentation of ideas in fashion and beauty contexts. Level 5 Contemporary Issues in Beauty Communication & Promotion – 20 credits This module will support you in an exploration of how contemporary political, social and cultural issues affect the fashion and beauty industry. Trend Forecasting – 20 credits In this module you will develop your research skills in order to identify macro and micro trends, explore their impact on the fashion beauty industry and apply them to communication methods. Working in the Beauty Communication and Promotion Industry – 20 credits This module will provide you with opportunities to develop your professional identity and employability skills. You will explore the relationship between creativity and communication skills, creating work to a professional standard whilst adhering to client specifications. Promoting a Live Event – 20 credits In this module you will manage the promotion of a live event to an intended audience. Collaboration – 20 credits Working collaboratively is an integral part of the creative industries. In this module you will learn how to elevate your creative projects by working as part of a creative team, developing strategies throughout for effective collaborative working practices. International Marketing & Promotion – 20 credits Fashion and Beauty is a global industry, in this module you will generate a strategic campaign for a global audience.

Assessment method

All assessments reflect current industry expectations and are examples of skills and practices that are required in current job roles within the beauty communication and promotion industry. These will include: Promotional material – a suite of promotional materials to include development of concepts, visuals and copy, for an event Trend Book – a forecast report that reports on macro and micro trends occurring in the fashion industry Visual reports – explore pertinent themes that surround a negotiated subject within beauty promotion and communication, including the commentary of other practitioners and theorists along with relevant visuals of examples with which the report engages Collaborative Project – work with other creatives to produce a project as part of a working team Content Writing – short content pieces relating to a range of beauty brands for a range of platforms Pitch presentations – present ideas and concepts for communication and promotional package providing a rationale for choices Reflective logs – reflect systematically on factors impacting the cosmetic makeup industry including environmental, cultural, social, political, and global influences

VTCT L3 Diploma: Pass in a relevant subject Access to HE Diploma: Overall pass with 60 credits, with 24 credits to be at a Merit grade in a relevant subject. IELTS: IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any component. International qualifications: International qualifications will be assessed against these criteria. University Centre Leeds welcomes applications from mature* applicants who may not have met the academic criteria, but who can demonstrate a wealth of experience in their chosen field.
