Course summary
This course provides for advanced research study in the field of Management. It aims to provide aspiring managers and business specialists with key insights in to research theory and practice within the management discipline. Specifically the objectives of this course are: To develop advanced research training and leading edge research practice and management theory at a professional and academic level. To provide an interdisciplinary context to research, gaining support from a variety of technical, academic and disciplinary contexts. Develop and apply key knowledge and understanding of Management theory and research practice to complex systems, both systematically and creatively, to advance and improve management theory and practice. To enhance independent and high level learning skills and personal development (critical awareness of the limits of various research techniques via taught modules and debates) so that researchers are able to work with self-direction and originality and to contribute to the management discipline.
Modules
Students will study 540 credits of specialist study in a range of Management topics. The course is made up of 240 credits of taught study followed by a 300 Credit Research based thesis. The following modules will be studied. Credits gained from a recognized Masters Degree 120 Credits (Level 7) Advanced Research Practice 20 Credits (Level 8) Advanced Social Research Perspectives 20 Credits (Level 8) Advanced Social Research Methodology 20 Credits (Level 8) Research Paper and Proposal 60 Credits (Level 8) Research Thesis 300 Credits (Level 8) The DMgt is awarded on successful completion of all taught elements as well as submission of a 50,000 word Research Thesis and a 15,000 word Research Proposal.
Assessment method
All taught module assessment is based upon 6000 words or equivalent. Assessment methods are designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of theoretical, applied and professional practice issues and include coursework essays, systems analysis and the design of interventions, research reports, presentations and critique. The independent research element of the programme consists of a: 5000 word research paper (plus presentation) to be submitted to a suitable conference / journal; a 12,000 word research proposal which outlines the key issues around the research work to be undertaken and, the research thesis which will be presented as a traditional 50,000 word thesis and tested via a traditional viva voce examination.
Entry requirements
The programme is designed for graduates from a range of different disciplines. The specific entry requirements include: • An honours degree (2.1 or above) that is acceptable to the Programme Director. • A recognised Masters Degree acceptable to the University for entry to the programme (exemption will then be given to the 120 Credits of Level 7 required to complete the programme). • A Masters of Research in Management (where appropriate credit exemptions on the DMgt may be given for previous successful study). • Candidates with exceptional and extensive work experience in management roles will also be considered for entry to the programme. Selection Procedure: Students are normally selected on the basis of their formal application, curriculum vitae and may be asked to attend an interview. Applicants are usually invited to have an informal conversation (skype or phone) with the programme director before any offer is made.
