Course summary

If you are a good listener with a high degree of empathy and want to follow a career supporting others through counselling therapies, this course may be for you. The first year lays the foundations of learning, with a broad introduction to counselling and applied psychology and the users of these services. This develops core skills, while preparing you for specialist subjects in year 2, or for employment. You will gain a wide range of knowledge linked to practical skills gained through research, independent study, directed study and workplace and clinic scenarios. In the second year you will specialise in a counselling related occupational area. You will develop and apply your own ideas to studies, to deal with uncertainty and complexity, to explore solutions, demonstrate critical evaluation and use theory and practice in a wide range of therapeutic situations. On completion, you will have a sound understanding of the principles in your area of specialist study and will know how to apply those principles more widely in counselling and psychology practice. Are you prepared for the challenge? Can you handle the emotional demands and acknowledge the importance of personal and professional growth to support others?
