Course summary

This exciting MSc Data Science for Business is the first in Scotland to be developed with input from SAS, a global leader in business analytics solutions; leading financial services organisation HSBC and The Data Lab to ensure it meets industry needs. The degree provides you with a deep understanding of the industrial and scientific relevance of advanced analytics and their application in strategic and operational decision-making while addressing the acknowledged shortage of business leaders and managers with a detailed working knowledge of data analytics. As a graduate you’ll have a highly sought-after blend of data analytics, business acumen and advanced management skills. You can develop specialist skills by choosing elective modules from finance, computing science and management. You’ll work on real life consultancy-style projects alongside industry leaders in data analytics. Our extensive network of external organisations across all sectors provides opportunities to build your knowledge, skills and experience for a successful career in business analytics roles.

Modules

Semester 1: Flying Start Leadership Programme. Core modules: Personal and professional development; big data: scientific and commercial applications; business analytics 1; business analytics 2; the future of technology, society and organisations. Semester 2: Group Consultancy Project in Data Science for Business: Students choose TWO modules (40 Credits) from the following electives in Semester 2: MSc Data Science for Business students specialising in Finance, Marketing, Data Science or Energy elective modules (which will be selected from a portfolio that is currently subject to academic approval): Risk management in banking; investment and portfolio management; digital marketing and advertising; contemporary issues in marketing; cluster computing; big data analytics; behavioural economics ii: business and policy applications; economics of climate change; energy management and sustainability in practice. MSc Data Science for Business students specialising in Management elective modules: New venture creation; innovation management; managing change; project management; corporate governance; leadership and responsible business; managing in emerging economies. Semester 3 All students must complete a Research Project over the Summer Semester. This will take the form of a Dissertation or Consultancy project.


Entry requirements

A minimum of a 2nd-class honours degree or equivalent. Applicants without these formal qualifications but with significant appropriate/relevant work/life experience are encouraged to apply. If English is not your 1st language you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your English language skills: IELTS: 6.0 with 5.5 minimum in each skill. Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): Grade C or above. Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): Grade C or above. Pearson Test of English (Academic): 54 with 51 in each component. IBT TOEFL: 80 with no subtest less than 17.
