Course summary

For graduates or those already working in the heritage sectors, this degree is informed by innovative and current research in key areas affecting the industry:

  • Policy concerns relating to heritage
  • Museum and cultural sectors in the UK, Ireland and internationally
  • Analysis of the social, economic, and cultural contexts of museums and heritage
  • Management issues relating to museums and heritage sites
  • Impact of digital technologies on the heritage experience
You will develop the appropriate skills for further academic study and professional development and practice. We assist students in establishing voluntary work placements including recent successful placements in the National Trust, local museums, arts centres and archives. Our students come from across Ireland, GB, US, Canada, and France, bringing a range of insights that add to the diversity of the experience. We have a thriving graduate network working in learning and outreach in museums, exhibition design, archives, heritage development, the cultural sector and PhD research.

Modules

Modules include: Exploring heritage; cultures of curatorship; exhibition: practice and evaluation; strategic management for the heritage and museum sectors; research in museum and heritage studies; research dissertation. If you choose not to do the research dissertation you may exit with a Postgraduate Diploma.

Assessment method

All modules are assessed via coursework.


Entry requirements

Postgraduate Diploma: You should normally hold a degree in a relevant discipline. MA: You should preferably hold a good Honours degree in a relevant discipline. Exceptionally, candidates who do not satisfy these requirements may, by virtue of relevant experience or learning, be admitted. Students who satisfactorily complete the Postgraduate Diploma at the required level will automatically be considered for progress to the MA. An interview may form part of the application process.
