Early Years Education at University of Sussex - UCAS

Course summary

  • 1st in the UK for our research impact in Education in REF 2021 (Times Higher Education)
  • 15th in the UK for Education (The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023)
Do you want to work in teaching or management in the UK, or in international Early Years educational contexts? This MA is ideal if you’re an international student wishing to explore early years education in the UK. You’ll study both the practical and theoretical aspects of education in the zero-to-five-years age range. Early Years learning primarily focuses on the following ideas:
  • what constitutes ‘quality’ in Early Years education?
  • equity, inclusion and justice for the pre-school child and the wider family
  • ideas of communication, imagination, language and literacy, and provision for the bi/trilingual child
  • understandings of early mathematical and scientific development
  • discourses of nurture, care and attachment.
At Sussex, we’re proud of our innovative approaches to teaching and education courses. We’ve got a network of over 150 local secondary, primary and nursery schools working together with the University to provide work placements for our education students.

Modules

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2023/24. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to COVID-19, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let our applicants know of material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity. We’ll do our best to provide as much optional choice as we can, but timetabling constraints mean it may not be possible to take some module combinations. The structure of a small number of courses means that the order of modules or the streams you choose may determine whether modules are core or optional. This means that your core modules or options may differ from what’s shown below. Core modules Core modules are taken by all students on the course. They give you a solid grounding in your chosen subject and prepare you to explore the topics that interest you most. All year

  • Research in Early Years Education
Autumn teaching
  • Critical Reflection; Early Years Education
Autumn and spring teaching
  • Exploring Professional Practice in Early Years Education
Spring and summer teaching
  • Reflecting on Professional Knowledge in Early Years
Options Alongside your core modules, you can choose options to broaden your horizons and tailor your course to your interests. This list gives you a flavour of our options, which are kept under review and may change, for example in response to student feedback or the latest research. While it’s our aim for students to take their preferred combinations of options, this can’t be guaranteed and will be subject to timetabling. Options may be grouped and if so, students will be able to choose a set number of options from the selection available in any particular group. Spring teaching
  • Curriculum, Learning and Society
  • Foundations of Education Policy, Planning and Development
  • Gender and Identities: Education, Citizenship and Youth
  • Global Childhoods; Rights, Protection and Justice
  • Refugees, Education and Development
- The Global Governance of Education and Conflict
