Course summary
A Brighton Paramedic Science degree will prepare you for a rewarding career where you’ll work in a fast-paced environment to assess patients’ conditions and make potentially lifesaving decisions about treatment and hospital transfer. This course is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and endorsed by the College of Paramedics, ensuring it covers all core areas and competencies. Successful completion of the degree means you will be eligible to apply for HCPC registration and practice as a paramedic. At Brighton, you’ll be part of a community that helps you grow, no matter what your background. Throughout the course you’ll develop the skills and knowledge to qualify, with around 50% of the course spent on placement. Most placements are with South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation, but other opportunities include working in areas such as mental health, paediatrics and primary care to ensure you gain a wide range of experience. You will also practise in our specialist facilities to build your confidence and knowledge through real-life scenarios. Year 1 In your first year of the Paramedic Science degree, you will combine weekly ambulance placements with classroom learning to build a strong foundation in anatomy, physiology, clinical skills and patient assessment. You will develop the knowledge and confidence to deliver safe, effective care under supervision, while gaining hands-on experience in real emergency settings. Core modules Foundations of Anatomy and Physiology Social Science and Professional Practice Introduction to Clinical Skills for Paramedics Physical Assessment for Paramedics Clinical Sciences for Paramedics Clinical Practice for Paramedics Year 1 Year 2 In your first year of the Paramedic Science degree, you will combine weekly ambulance placements with classroom learning to build a strong foundation in anatomy, physiology, clinical skills and patient assessment. You will develop the knowledge and confidence to deliver safe, effective care under supervision, while gaining hands-on experience in real emergency settings. Core modules Primary and Urgent Care for Paramedics 1 Medical Emergencies Assessment and Management of the High Acuity Patient Care Across the Lifespan Primary and Urgent Care for Paramedics 2 Clinical Practice for Paramedics Year 2 Final year In your final year, you will consolidate your clinical expertise and prepare for the transition to becoming a confident, autonomous paramedic. You will explore leadership, interprofessional collaboration and contemporary healthcare challenges, while completing a research dissertation and continuing to develop your practice through advanced placements and simulation-based learning.
