UCEN Manchester has opted into the TEF and received a Silver award.
The award provides a progression route for the students studying the FdA 3D Modelling and Animation for Games and Media onto a Level 6 programme that matches the creative and technical requirements of this industry. Students could progress onto a range of roles including animating for linear storytelling, CGI visual F/X, visualisation projects or modelling and animating for real-time applications such as games or VR. It is envisaged that students will produce a high quality show reel at the end of the year that demonstrates their skills in their chosen specialism(s). This progression route recognises that although these are creative disciplines there is a requirement for a high level of technical ability within this industry. This approach allows for greater emphasis in the programme design on the development of technical skills than within the BA (Hons) Creative Media and Visual Communication (top up). The first half of the academic year is designed to allow the students to explore a range of research strategies that will allow them to develop their specialist skills and knowledge base. At the same time, they will be working on a practical project that while challenging will encourage students to experiment with ideas and techniques. They will then be in a strong position to propose a significant project that will be produced in the second half of the programme.
Examples of current modules- 3D Industry Research (30 credits) This unit provides students with the opportunity to undertake a technical research project in an area of their specialism that will support their career aspirations and professional knowledge base. As well as emerging technologies and innovations in production pipelines some students may chose to use the unit as an opportunity for a more in-depth study into established techniques that are a key part of the industry they intend to progress onto. 3D Minor Project (30 credits) In this unit students will undertake a project that will allow them to explore and develop their 3D design, animation and modelling skills in a professional context which recognizes the need for specialization. Although there is a clear expectation that the unit will lead to a practical outcome students will be encouraged to work towards a prototype that allows for more opportunities for experimentation and development of techniques rather than focusing on the professional quality of the outcome. Team projects will be encouraged in this unit. Negotiated Specialist Project (60 credits) The focus of each student’s negotiated practice will evolve from their subject specialism and therefore integrate appropriate research, creative development and realisation within a defined context. Students will be required to produce an initial proposal as part of the negotiation of their area of investigation, undertake an extended piece of work, and to locate and rationalise their specialism in the context of relevant theories and cultural contexts
The course is assessed with one assignment per module. Students are encouraged to be creative through all assignments but must meet a certain criteria given by the tutor. Development of report writing and self-awareness / evaluation of own skills are built into assignments to enable students to develop themselves. A range of assessment methods are used and could be in the form of the following: • Review/Tutorials • Group Assessment • Portfolio of project work • Project presentations • Personal Development/Digital Diary • Research
