Summary: Pharmaceutical science takes a multidisciplinary approach to studying medicines. This course gives you a strong base in chemistry, biochemistry and biological science, preparing you for work in the pharmaceutical industry. Course details: This course includes an integrated foundation year – ideal if you need additional preparation in the fundamental sciences and/or if you don’t have sufficient tariff points to join Year 1 of the degree directly. Apart from the foundation year, the remainder of this degree is identical to the programme BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Science and leads to the same level award. You develop an understanding of the physicochemical and biological principles that underpin the design, function, synthesis, analysis and delivery of pharmaceutical substances. Throughout this course we also help you develop the technical, practical and professional skills that employers value, and you have access to state of the art laboratories and equipment for laboratory training. Graduates with a few years of experience can expect to earn around £32,500 - £52,500 a year. Examples of the type of work you might be involved in include clinical trials, manufacturing and supply of drugs and medicines, marketing, medical sales, research and development of new pharmaceutical products. Pharmaceutical scientists work in areas such as research, product development, quality assurance and analytical science, marketing and sales within the pharmaceutical and chemical industries and elsewhere. As well as working directly within the industry, pharmaceutical science graduates are well qualified for careers in teaching, forensic science, environmental protection, and health and safety assurance. You have the opportunity to spend one year learning and developing your skills through work experience. A dedicated work placement officer and the University's award-winning careers service help you with applying for a placement. Advice is also available on job hunting and networking. Employers are often invited to our School to meet you and present you with opportunities for work placements. By taking a work placement year you gain experience favoured by graduate recruiters and develop your technical skillset. Applicants are normally invited for interview. Each applicant will receive an individualised offer following an interview. In cases where an interview cannot take place the typical offer will be 32-88 tariff points including at least 1 A level or equivalent. GCSE English Language and maths at grade 4 (or C) or equivalent. Applications from suitably-motivated students with other equivalent qualifications are warmly welcome.
