Course summary
This degree explores the human capacity for language from the perspectives of how language works and is structured as a system (linguistics), and how it is used as an expressive tool by writers, including poets, novelists and dramatists (literature). Combining the science and art of language will help you develop skills required to make a sophisticated critique of the written and spoken word. You will engage in contemporary debates about language and have the chance to explore a variety of topics from women’s writing and feminist theory to language use and the psychology and philosophy of language. The English literature strand will allow you to explore the creative side of writing. The linguistics strand encourages you to explore language from a scientific perspective. You’ll study the relationship between language and the mind and language and society. The degree will teach you transferable skills in research methods and text analysis, and communication, helping you to become a critical, independent thinker with a capacity for insight into texts and genres.
