Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) have a vital role within the contemporary perioperative team, working in this exciting and dynamic environment, ODPs provide care during the anaesthetic, surgical and recovery phases of a patient’s hospital treatment. ODPs require in-depth knowledge and skills in areas such as anatomy and physiology, surgical and anaesthetic procedures, legal and ethical issues, and teamwork. • Study a broad range of subjects including anatomy and physiology, research, legal and ethical issues, introduction to surgery, anaesthetics and post-operative recovery, communication, critical reflection, pharmacology, enhanced roles, leadership and management, and interdisciplinary teamwork. • Prepare for a professional career in Operating department Practice. • Practical experience of perioperative skills and procedures, in context is gained through placements in a variety of settings across North Wales Health Board. • The Operating department Practice programme at WGU is the only programme of its kind in North Wales and is one of only two programmes in all of Wales. This is a Welsh Government Bursary-commissioned programme. A full NHS bursary, including tuition fees and a non-repayable bursary for living costs, is available for this programme providing you agree to work in Wales for two years after registration (subject to change). *Subject to validation and accreditation
Modules
YEAR 1 (LEVEL 4) Students will be exposed to a wide range of development theory modules and practice experiences. They are expected to safely demonstrate fundamental knowledge and skills within care, compassion, developing underpinning knowledge and appropriate attitudes under close supervision. MODULES • Preparation for professional practice • Clinical practice and simulation (Yr1) • Fundamental principles of Perioperative care • Legal, ethical and social issues in perioperative practice • Anatomy and Physiology YEAR 2 (LEVEL 5) Students will be exposed to an increasing range of field specific experiences. They are expected to consistently demonstrate skills and knowledge at an emerging level of competence within care, compassion, further developing underpinning knowledge and appropriate professional attitudes. They are expected to take responsibility and develop autonomy for care delivery with less direct supervision. MODULES • Pharmacology in perioperative practice • Principles of Post Anaesthetic Care • Appraising research in Health and social care • Holistic care across the lifespan • Clinical practice and simulation (Yr2) YEAR 3 (LEVEL 6) Students will be exposed to a broad range of field specific experiences. They are expected to consistently demonstrate and promote evidence-based care with compassion, confidence, competence and appropriate professional attitudes. They should take increasing responsibility for care delivery and give support to novice students. The level of supervision should reflect their developing knowledge, skills and autonomy.
